Our approach to training and technical assistance

ENGAGING THE WHOLE HEALTH CENTER

Upstream USA delivers CME/CEU-eligible on-site training and technical assistance to health centers so they can remove barriers to same-day offering of the full range of contraceptive methods, including Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARCs).

We understand that providing high quality care requires teamwork, so our approach engages the whole health care team and takes place on-site and in-person.

We work with health care providers nationwide, including hospitals, private practice groups, state and local health departments, Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), Planned Parenthood clinics, community agencies and more.

Our customized training and quality improvement measures include:

PATIENT-CENTERED COUNSELING

  • Training health center staff to provide excellent, client-centered counseling in compliance with the CDC/OPA’s Quality Family Planning Guidelines, including the full range of methods and dual methods
  • Providing patient education materials in multiple languages
  • Developing public awareness campaigns to increase knowledge and positive regard for IUDs and the implant
  • Advising on optimal utilization of all levels of staff to expedite and streamline contraceptive care, including training phone and front-line medical staff
  • Customized assistance, including guidance on implementing point-of-care pregnancy testing, training on confidentiality for teens and more

IUD AND IMPLANT PLACEMENT AND REMOVAL

  • Teaching clinicians placement and removal skills for IUDs and the implant (Mirena/Skyla, Paragard, Liletta, and Nexplanon)
  • Providing new learners with access to preceptors
  • Ensuring adequate eligibility screening is being conducted

IMPROVING ADMINISTRATIVE SYSTEMS

  • Integrating pregnancy intention questions into workflow and electronic medical records
  • Providing access to contraceptive protocols, policy and procedures, and consent forms
  • Providing billing and coding guides for financial and clinical staff, including access to our own “Guide to Billing and Coding for Contraceptives”
  • Assisting with stocking and supplies
  • Providing workflow assistance that increases single-visit access to all methods of contraception

PROVEN CURRICULUM

Our work is rooted in the Quality Family Planning guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Office of Population Affairs. It includes hands on exercises on how to use the chart, wheel and app versions of the CDC’s Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use as well as a review of the CDC’s Selected Practice Recommendations for Contraceptive Use.
